Family Mediation

Overview

Family mediation is a voluntary dispute resolution process in which a neutral third party, the mediator, helps family members work together to resolve conflict in a respectful and constructive way. Mediation may involve parents, step-parents, grandparents, or other caregivers, depending on the family structure and the issues involved.

The mediator does not make decisions for the parties. Instead, they facilitate meaningful conversations, help clarify issues, and support the parties in reaching solutions that are mutually acceptable and focused on the best interests of the children.

Why Choose Family Mediation?

Family mediation is often a more affordable and less adversarial alternative to court and litigation. It takes place in a private, supportive environment and allows families to:

  • Identify and work toward shared goals
  • Address parenting time and decision-making
  • Resolve financial and separation-related issues
  • Improve communication and reduce conflict

Mediation encourages collaboration rather than confrontation, helping families move forward with greater clarity and stability.

How the Mediation Process Works

The mediator typically begins by meeting individually with each party to understand their concerns, priorities, and perspectives. The mediator then helps define the issues that need to be addressed and ensures everyone is working toward common goals.

Throughout the process, the mediator assists the parties in exploring options, understanding each other’s viewpoints, and developing practical solutions. The outcome may be a verbal or written agreement, which may or may not be legally binding. Parties are strongly encouraged to have any agreement reviewed by a lawyer before relying on it.

Cost and Payment

NavOn uses a retainer model for separation and divorce services. This means payment is made in advance, and fees are drawn from the retainer as work is completed. Any unused funds are returned at the conclusion of services.

Because every family’s situation is different, total costs can vary. Our mediation fees are $350.00 per hour + HST, and costs are often shared equally between the parties after their initial intake. A non-refundable administration fee of $200.00 is required at the time of referral.

Mediation typically costs approximately $10,000.00, depending on the complexity of the issues involved.

Retainers may be paid by E-transfer, Credit card (2.4% surcharge applies), or Cheque

A monthly accounting of the retainer balance can be provided upon request.

Our team is available to answer your questions about NavOn services and provide the information needed to make a referral.

Both parties must agree to participate in mediation.

For families who are currently involved in court proceedings, a joint meeting with all involved lawyers is often required to better understand the family’s circumstances and how NavOn can be most helpful in supporting the family to move forward. NavOn does not charge a fee for this initial meeting.
